What determines the total price of representation?
The cost to hire a personal injury lawyer in Kansas City depends on the written representation agreement; the approved record for this general information does not establish any firm's percentage, consultation charge, expense policy, or no-recovery terms. A reliable comparison therefore starts with the proposed contract, not a fee figure found on a general webpage.
Put four separate money columns on the written information
List attorney compensation in one column, litigation or investigation expenses in a second, medical or benefit reimbursement claims in a third, and taxes or other outside obligations in a fourth. For the lawyer's fee, identify the calculation base, every percentage or tier, the event that triggers payment, and whether the rate changes after filing, discovery, mediation, trial preparation, or appeal.
For case spending, ask who authorizes an expense, who initially pays it, how it appears on an accounting, and whether repayment is calculated before or after the fee. Filing charges, records, depositions, experts, travel, and demonstrative materials should be discussed as possible categories, not assumed firm practices.
Run the agreement through different endings
A useful price review follows the same contract through several outcomes: a pre-suit recovery, a recovery after litigation begins, no recovery, client termination, lawyer withdrawal, a change of counsel, or an appeal. The contract should reveal which obligations survive each event, how completed work is treated, and whether another lawyer's involvement changes the division without increasing the client's agreed burden.
Gross proceeds are not the same as the amount delivered to the client. Before comparing proposals, request an illustrative closing statement that shows the order in which fees, reimbursed expenses, liens, and other authorized deductions would be handled. Any illustration should be labeled hypothetical rather than presented as a forecast.
Questions that expose a vague price term
Ask for the fee base, stage changes, cost-approval process, unsuccessful-case treatment, termination language, co-counsel or referral arrangement, lien language, dispute procedure, and final accounting duty in writing. Also confirm which services fall outside the engagement. Those answers make two Kansas City proposals comparable even when their headline descriptions sound alike.
