Representation Cost Must Be Read From the Entire Written Agreement
The cost of hiring Denver counsel depends on the actual written agreement and cannot be determined from a general webpage. Before comparing firms, separate attorney compensation from filing, records, depositions, experts, service, travel, exhibits, or other case expenses, and then separate both from medical bills, liens, taxes, or other third-party obligations. A gross recovery is not the client’s net.
Build a Payment Matrix for Every Case Stage
List consultation, pre-suit work, filing, discovery, trial, appeal, and termination as separate stages. For each, identify the fee method, calculation base, rate or tier stated in the contract, triggering event, expense responsibility, approval threshold, and payment sequence. Personal injury attorneys should explain changes between stages without inventing a standard percentage.
Test at least four outcomes: early resolution, recovery after substantial litigation, no recovery, and withdrawal or client termination. Record any fee claim, advanced-cost reimbursement, outside financing, interest, file-transfer charge, dispute mechanism, or division with another lawyer. The agreement controls; an advertising phrase does not.
Keep Case Expenses and Outside Obligations Visible
Ask who selects vendors, who approves costly work, who initially pays each invoice, and when reimbursement occurs. Request a cost ledger naming date, vendor, purpose, authorization, amount, and current responsibility. An estimate should remain labeled until a real invoice replaces it.
Counsel can explain the firm’s handling of expenses, but medical-provider balances, health-plan reimbursement, government benefits, child-support intercepts, taxes, and similar deductions may require separate records or advice. Ask which amounts are known, disputed, negotiable, protected, or merely projected.
Reconcile Every Scenario From Gross to Net
For each example, start with the hypothetical gross amount and subtract only contractually or legally supported items in the stated order. Show compensation, expenses, liens or balances, other deductions, and the estimated client net. Include uncertainty ranges rather than a false exact number.
Three priorities are to obtain the complete agreement before signing, request written examples for recovery and no-recovery outcomes, and require a closing statement that reconciles every deduction. Keep each firm’s scenario sheet beside its proposed contract so differences remain visible during comparison. Date every revision so a replaced term cannot be mistaken for the final agreement. Those steps enable a fair comparison without publishing unapproved firm rates or promising that any recovery will occur. At S&S Law, we help Denver clients with representation costs.
