Confirm What an Orange Consultation Actually Covers
Some Orange injury firms offer an initial consultation without charging a consultation fee, but the policy belongs to the individual firm and should be confirmed before the call. “Free consultation” does not automatically mean the firm has accepted the matter, formed an attorney-client relationship, agreed to investigate, or promised that every later service and expense will be free.
When scheduling, ask whether a lawyer for personal injury will participate, how long the meeting lasts, what topics are included, and whether any record review or follow-up carries a charge. Put the answer in the appointment notes.
Define the Meeting Before Sharing the File
Confirm the participants, format, expected duration, conflict-check information, document limits, cancellation policy, accessibility needs, and secure submission method. Ask whether the meeting is an intake screen, a legal consultation, or both.
Do not send originals or highly sensitive identifiers through an unapproved channel. A short chronology, party list, event date, upcoming deadlines, insurer letters, and a focused document set usually make the first discussion more efficient.
Separate Consultation From Representation
The meeting may end with acceptance, a request for more information, a decline, or a referral suggestion. Do not treat the consultation as representation until the firm completes its required engagement process and the written terms identify scope, fees, expenses, communication, and deadline responsibility.
If a personal injury law firm requests additional records, identify who will obtain them, whether a cost applies, when the review is expected, and whether the client must protect any deadline while the decision is pending.
Leave With Four Written Answers
At the end, record whether the firm is representing you now, what information remains needed, who is responsible for the next action, and which date requires attention. If the answer is no, ask whether the firm can identify the type of lawyer or process that may fit.
A no-charge first meeting can be valuable, but its value comes from a clear scope and next step. Confirm those terms directly rather than assuming the advertisement answers them.
If more review is promised, ask for the exact documents requested and a follow-up date. Until acceptance is confirmed, continue protecting evidence, responding to valid obligations, and tracking legal dates. At S&S Law, we help Orange clients with consultation terms.
