Over two million infant swings and rockers are being recalled due to the risk of entanglement and strangulation.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Thorley Industries announced the voluntary recall on Monday, which does business as 4moms.
About 2 million MamaRoo swings and 220,000 RockaRoo rockers are being called back. Canada also bought 60,000 MamaRoos and 10,000 RockaRoos.
The MamaRoo baby swing has different speeds and motions.
Only swings with a 3-point harness are part of the recall, and the recall doesn’t affect the MamaRoo model with a 5-point harness.
When the swing or rocker isn’t being used, the restraint straps can hang below the seat.
Any infants crawling underneath can become entangled in the straps, posing entanglement and strangulation hazards.
4moms has received two reports of babies getting caught in the strap under an empty MamaRoo infant swing after crawling under the seat.
One baby, who was 10 months old, died from suffocation, and the other, who was also a 10-month-old infant, got bruises on his neck before being rescued by a caregiver.
There have been no reports of problems with the RockaRoo.
The company told Consumer Reports that the child died in December 2020.
The CPSC’s incident report says that the first injury occurred in 2018.
In the report, a parent says their child crawled through a gap between the swing’s base and seat and got caught in the strap.
“The strap got so tightly twisted around his neck I had to cut the strap to loosen him. He suffered marks and popped blood vessels all the way around his neck,” the parent wrote.
“Very scary and is dangerous if anyone has this product and doesn’t realize the straps underneath can do this,” the person added.
The straps are the targets of the recall.
If you have any recalled products, you should contact 4moms immediately to sign up for a free strap fastener that will keep the straps from extending under the swing when it’s not being used.
If you have crawling babies, stop using the recalled swings and rockers immediately until you get a strap fastener.
Put them somewhere crawling babies can’t get to.
“We are deeply saddened by the two incidents that occurred when babies crawled under the seat of unoccupied MamaRoo swings,” Gary Waters, CEO of 4moms, said in a statement.
“The free strap fastener kit we have designed is an easy-to-install solution that we believe will prevent any other incidents from happening,” he added.
